Chris
Meder
From a young age Dunedin sculptor Chris Meder was enthused by different metal forms and shapes. Working alongside his father with cars, studying recycled materials at art school, nine years on various films and a variety of art departments, gave him complete creative freedom to fabricate and transform shapes into his unique sculptural creations.
Chris studied the shape and texture of the material and visualised the end product and how that shape and texture could illustrate the sculpture's minutiae.
Each sculpture that Chris produced is unique, and was created through welding piece on top of piece. Throughout this creative process, Chris would stand back from the sculpture using various viewpoints to build on and tweak his contemporary creations.
Body language of the sculpture was also important during their creation. Great care was taken to assert a correct anatomical stance. Each sculpture has its own personality, which is promoted with a unique facial expression-hence the reason for naming his creations.
Gallery De Novo represented Chris's work from July 2008 and the demand for his work was extraordinary with pieces selling within a few days of coming into the gallery.
Unfortunately none of Chris’s work is for sale anymore due to his passing in July 2010 but his memory and extraordinary zest for life lives on in his creations.
