Frank Gordon

Frank Gordon originates from Glasgow, Scotland, and moved to Dunedin in 2000. His paintings reflect his love of Dunedin’s culture, landscape and people and his works are often characterised by humour, colour, pathos and “lighter than air” people.

In August 2005, Frank had his first solo exhibition at the Cleveland Living Arts Centre, Dunedin. This was a highly successful show, with most of the works selling on opening night. In September 2005 Frank won the highly commended prize for painting in the Cleveland Art Awards, judged by Neil Roberts (senior curator of Christchurch Art Gallery).

Frank has been a two time winner of the Yellow Pages cover – with his paintings gracing the Otago phone books in 2006 and 2007.

Frank continued to have successful exhibitions, including in April 2007 Frank’s exhibition The Reality Show at Gallery De Novo which represented scenes from everyday Dunedin life with Frank’s usual humour; and in 2009, The Flying Poet and Other Stories. One of his works ‘Graduation Day’ sold to the Otago University and limited edition prints have also been made available at Gallery De Novo.

“I like to produce paintings that present a situation whether it is unusual, fanciful or a step beyond reality. There is usually an element of humour in my work. I don’t consciously set out to achieve this it just seems to evolve with the process. Sometimes it is more subtle than others which are obviously a little bit quirky or even downright slapstick.”
