Jo St Baker’s background as a graphic artist has contributed much to the development of her distinctive style – the vivid use of colour, the eye-catching composition and her unique sense of communication and energy. Her work shows a passion not only for the grandeur of the world but also it’s intricate detail. Her deep love of the sea and coastline are evident in many of her works. The ocean’s ever-changing moods and that special vitality that is beach culture has been one of her major inspirations.
St Baker has fallen in love with the character of Otago homes and buildings and having first started out as a keen photographer, she still employs the medium to capture “moments” to use in her work but enjoys manipulating compositions to work in with “what is really being said” in each piece.
St Baker is one of Gallery De Novo's most popular full time artists who has exhibited for many years. She recently completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts at Otago Polytechnic School of Art, graduating in 2010 and her work was a highlight at the Dunedin School of Art SITE Exhibition showing her versatility as an artist.
