Lindsay
Paul
was born in Invercargill in 1952. He found school to be
"a tire-some business" and ended up spending a
good deal of time drawing WW2 Battle scenes, as Latin and
book-keeping did not seem very relevant for him.
Having
left school at 15, he worked as a Sign writers apprentice,
this was as close to Commercial Art as was possible at the
time. Sign writing then was all made with pencils and brushes,
drawn by hand, and were not complete without an Illustration.
This experience showed off his immense talent as a realistic
painter, and he was soon asked to paint for friends and
family.
His
paintings largely revolve around things we see every day,
but rarely stop to look at - be it a field with ruins, objects
from yester-year or a simple chimney.
Light,
is extremely important in a painting, without it there is
no colour, contrast or shadow - elements that are all very
apparent in Paul's work.
