Ivan Hill

Ivan Hill is a well-recognized name in the art circles of Dunedin. He has gained a huge reputation and following as a New Zealand naive artist and has held exhibitions throughout the country dating back to 1980. Thirty three years later, Ivan celebrated his 80th birthday with the release of his latest work "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" at Gallery De Novo which he believed would be his last exhibition.

In May 2008 (the year of his 75th birthday) Ivan held a highly successful show "The Witches of Leith Valley" at Gallery De Novo. This show was a huge success with most works selling on opening night, and one arts reviewer commenting in the Otago Daily Times that "This may be the artist's finest single collection of works. If not, it is certainly one of his best".
"Mermaids" was Ivan’s next body of work and the show was made up of oil paintings and pencil drawings depicting Ralph Hotere as a pirate, Jeffery Harris as his first mate, as well as mermaids and various mysterious sea creatures in amusing under-the-sea adventures. It was during this exhibition that a television crew from TVNZ6 made a short documentary on Ivan, which aired on the arts series "The Gravy".

Ivan’s preferred medium is oil on primed canvas, but he has also had numerous successful works completed in coloured pencil. Characteristics of his works include bright use of colour, thickly applied paint and wonderfully character-filled scenes with larger than life figures of his peers and/or topical public figures.

His works are represented in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Fighter Pilots Museum in Wanaka, the Mosgiel Public Library and Te Papa - Museum of New Zealand, Wellington.
Gallery De Novo is delighted to hold the work of Ivan Hill – a true icon of New Zealand art.

83rd Birthday Celebration (2016)
We are delighted to help celebrate another year of work by Ivan Hill as he turns 83 years of age this June.  His adaptation of Alice In Wonderland, leads to an assortment of paintings of Alice in North Dunedin as catches the Normanby bus and visits the Botanical Gardens with her Mad Hatter and Rabbit friends (complete with New World bag in hand!)  She even meets up with Ralph Hotere and Ivan to share in some birthday cake.
