Priscilla Cowie

Iwi: Ngāi Tahu, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu – French & Scottish

"Māori culture is the backbone of my art practice. I am constantly inspired and driven to share the stories and contemporary experiences of our Indigenous culture and the natural environment."

In 1995 Priscilla graduated from the University of Canterbury, School of Fine Arts and since then has exhibited widely, in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, France and Spain. In 2015 Priscilla was an Artist in Resident in Vallauris, France.

She works in various mediums including bronze, painting, printmaking and design.
"In 2015 I was fortunate to be mentored by Marian Fountain, in the art of medal making - small hand held, bronze sculptures, in Paris, France. These new bronze art works are inspired by the oral narratives and love story surrounding my Māori and French ancestors, who met in the early 1800’s. ‘Ngā taura here’ - the ties that bind these two cultures historically to present day."

Gallery De Novo is delighted to show Tuakana Teina – Māori French, Priscillia's Bronze medals – First edition, created and cast in France.
