Geoffrey Robinson

Geoffrey Robinson

Born East Africa 1945, Geoffrey Robinson spent a carefree barefoot 1950’s childhood in Nelson NZ before emigrating to Britain to study painting at the Bournemouth College of Art from 1961. For 25 years his fine art interests had to give way to an early career in advertising until 1997 when he emerged, at last, as a full-time professional artist, and in 2004 was recognized in a 30-minute Meridian network television documentary about his life and work.

In 2006 a book called The Dreaming Paintbrush was published with colour plates of 12 Geoffrey Robinson paintings and 12 short stories by British writers inspired by the paintings. In 2007 a book by the art historian Peter Davies, St Ives 1975 – 2005, was published, in which Geoffrey’s work was favourably reviewed and acknowledged at length.

The work of Geoffrey Robinson has received much acclaim and his numerous solo exhibitions throughout the South of England, Belfast and America bear testament to his reputation. His paintings are held in the public collections of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, the Paintings in Hospitals London collection, the Royal Bournemouth Hospital as well as the private collections of Lord David Puttnam CBE and singer George Michael.

Gallery De Novo has been the only gallery outside of the United Kingdom to represent Geoffrey's paintings since 2005 and in March 2008 we were proud to host his first New Zealand exhibition "Tabletop Perspectives". The show was very well received and sold out within the first week. Having represented Geoffrey for the past 8 years, Gallery De Novo has helped develop a strong following of his very unique style in New Zealand.
