Liz Abbott

Liz is a local Otago artist who has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand.  She graduated with a diploma in Fine Arts with Honours, majoring in printmaking from the Otago Polytechnic School of art in 1989.  Several years later she returned to complete her Master of Fine Arts, this time in Painting.

From 2003, Liz held solo exhibitions at the Marshall Seifert Gallery, Dunedin and the

Salamander Gallery in Christchurch.  In May 2006 she held a significant show of her work at the Hocken Library titled ‘Fanny and Me’ - which was an exhibition of paintings Liz completed in response to the work of 19th Century painter, Fanny Brunton, from her sketch book housed in the Hocken collections.  The show included paintings on canvas, but a large proportion of the work was dedicated to tiny miniature paintings on blocks.  Although small in size, these works were immensely strong on mass, but also held their own and the exhibition was a great success.

Liz has also been the recipient of numerous art awards including the Croda Printmaking Award (1988 Otago Polytechnic), winner of the Telecom Art Awards (1995 & 2001),  the Cleveland Art Awards (2005) and the North Shore City Art Awards (2005).  Her work has been reviewed in Art New Zealand (Spring 2005) and in the Listener (June 25 2005).
