Luke Calder

For the past 18 years Luke Calder has been involved in the design industry, with the last 12, running his own design business.

In his youth he had a fascination with cultures far removed from his upbringing in Mt Roskill. He spent many hours looking through National Geographic magazines and referencing locations in an equally ancient Atlas. This began his fascination with maps, globes and travel which has continued with Luke collecting vintage tin globes, each unique in appearance with their own stories and history.

Luke is an adaptable designer who develops unique designs, latterly his
wall sculptures. These are made from steel, MDF, enamel paint and copper
leaf. The copper leaf has been treated with a patina to create an oxidised
effect. Over time this oxidisation will change with a variety of green colours
emerging from the copper. In this sense It is an organic and unique piece of
wall sculpture.

For Luke, the essence of the earth is the relationship between the land
and water, abstract yet familiar. Every bay, every headland every Island
harbouring numerous untold stories and memories for people.
